Keiser's nursing programs from Washington State
Three separate checks stand between a Washington nurse and a Keiser FNP practicum at home, and in September 2026 none of them was cleared. The FNP disclosure marks Washington as not meeting educational requirements, the Graduate School FAQ lists Washington among MSN/FNP/DNP restrictions, and Keiser is missing from the Washington State Board of Nursing's September 21, 2026 roster of approved programs from other states.

What WAC 246-840-571 asks of an outside school
Washington's rule reaches every out-of-state distance program that wants its students in Washington clinical or practice settings, from RN to BSN tracks through MSN and NP programs. A school applies to WABON, demonstrates that its program matches Washington's own standards, arranges supervision and evaluation of its students inside the state, keeps national accreditation and reports every year.
Approval, once granted, is narrow: the Board lets approved schools place only students who live in Washington, and weighs anything else individually. An outside school's instructors for ARNP clinical practice in the state must be licensed as Washington ARNPs. A family member or friend of the student may not precept an ARNP student, and the preceptor needs a current, unrestricted license as an ARNP, physician (MD or DO) or out-of-state counterpart.
Change may be coming. At the end of 2025 (December 5), WABON launched a rulemaking with a CR-101 notice covering WAC 246-840-500 to 571, and easing obstacles to clinical placement is on the agenda.
Keiser's approval of a Washington preceptor would not satisfy WABON: the Board approves the school itself, and Keiser was not on its list.
Practice, the compact and Washington's preceptor grant
The Nurse Licensure Compact became operational in Washington on January 31, 2024. Washington has not passed the APRN Compact. AANP counts Washington among its full practice states.
Washington's legislature also created a Student Nurse Preceptorship Grant, run by WABON in quarterly cycles for experienced ARNP, RN and LPN preceptors, one year minimum, who give each student at least 80 hours. WABON says plainly that out-of-state schools do not qualify, wherever the hours are logged, and RN to BSN students are left out as well, so a Keiser student's preceptor would not qualify.
Seattle, Spokane and other NP training centers
Washington's major systems include UW Medicine, Providence (based in Renton, with Providence Swedish in its family), MultiCare, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health and PeaceHealth. By population, Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue dwarfs everything else, with Spokane-Spokane Valley, the Vancouver side of the Portland metro and Kennewick-Richland trailing well behind. Statewide public health belongs to the Washington State Department of Health. These names describe where Washington NPs train, not sites with Keiser agreements, and the Oregon side of the Portland metro carries its own Keiser restrictions, covered on the Oregon page.

Questions Keiser students ask
Can I study Keiser's online FNP while living in Washington?
Keiser's own sources point against it: the November 2025 FNP disclosure lists Washington as not meeting educational requirements, and the Graduate School FAQ names Washington among its MSN/FNP/DNP restrictions. Only Keiser's Graduate School can say whether anything has changed, so ask before applying.
Is Keiser approved by WABON to place nursing students in Washington?
Keiser does not appear on the roster of approved out-of-state programs that WABON dated September 21, 2026. Washington wants that approval in place before an outside distance program sends students into any Washington clinical or practice experience, and approved placements are open only to Washington residents.
Can a close friend who works as an ARNP be my Washington preceptor?
No. Under Washington's education rules, an ARNP student's family members and friends are off the preceptor list. Keiser's own rules also keep your immediate supervisor out of the role and ask for direct supervision throughout. Our preceptor requirements page lists Keiser's standards.
Might WABON's rules for out-of-state programs change?
They might. WABON's December 2025 CR-101 notice opened a review of its education rules, sections 500 through 571 of WAC 246-840, and clearing clinical placement barriers is one stated aim. For now, the existing approval rule still governs outside programs.
