Doing Keiser's FNP clinicals in New Mexico
Keiser's November 2025 FNP disclosure counts New Mexico among the states where the program meets educational requirements, and the Graduate School FAQ puts no limit on it. One state rule deserves attention early: New Mexico wants Board sign-off from schools whose students spend more than a semester in clinical placements there.

A placement rule that counts semesters
Under 16.12.3.11 NMAC, a school sending students into more than a semester's worth of New Mexico clinical or field placements has to seek the Board's approval for those placements, and a school approved by another state's board is held to the minimums in the next section of the code. The part as a whole is aimed at education leading to a New Mexico license and has no separate words for NP or RN to BSN programs, so its reach over Keiser's FNP is unsettled.
The calendar is why it matters. Keiser splits each 16-week semester into two 8-week terms, and the FNP's five practicums take one term apiece, so finishing the whole sequence in New Mexico means several semesters of clinical time here. Whether Keiser holds New Mexico placement approval was not checked in the research, so ask the Graduate School before you enroll and keep the answer in writing for any site that asks. A 2023 Keiser policy adds that non-Florida hours may not count everywhere, so verify New Mexico's Board accepts yours; the out-of-state FNP guide covers that check.
Preceptor standards: two years here, one at Keiser
The same New Mexico rules picture the preceptor as a nurse with at least two years in practice, licensed at the student's target level or higher, and schools approved for placements must follow them. Keiser's floor is lower: one year of experience, an active and unencumbered license, and a practice at the site.
Should the state rule apply, meet the two-year bar, and favor an NP, since the rule speaks of nurses. Keiser does accept MDs and DOs, so a physician's offer is worth a quick question to Keiser about how the state wording fits. Keiser's preceptor requirements set out the rest.
Licensing and practice in New Mexico
Keiser's NP admissions pair an active, unrestricted Florida RN license with a license valid in New Mexico when your clinicals happen here, and New Mexico applicants furnish written verification that the state allows the rotations and a future NP license. Multistate RN licenses have been issued in New Mexico since compact membership took effect in January 2018, and the Board began charging for them on June 1, 2026. No APRN Compact legislation has passed here.
AANP counts New Mexico as full practice, meaning the Board of Nursing alone licenses and oversees NPs. Keiser's licensing side is on the Florida license page.

UNM Health, run by the University of New Mexico, is the lone academic medical center in the state. Lovelace and Presbyterian are the other major systems, and Santa Fe has CHRISTUS St. Vincent. Use them to picture where practices sit; none is presented here as a Keiser partner. The research found no New Mexico preceptor incentive.
Arizona carries 'does not meet' on Keiser's disclosure, and Utah requires program approval, so a practicum kept inside New Mexico is the cleaner plan.
Residency trips to Fort Lauderdale
Plan on two flights east for the FNP. Both residencies are in person in Fort Lauderdale: three days attached to Advanced Assessment, then a two-day weekend late in the program with the Integration Practicum. WHNP students go three times. Does New Mexico require approval before my Keiser FNP clinicals?
It may. New Mexico asks schools whose students spend more than a semester in its clinical placements to get Board approval, but the rule is framed around education toward a New Mexico license and never names NP programs. Ask Keiser's Graduate School whether it applies and whether Keiser holds that approval.
How much experience does my New Mexico preceptor need?
Keiser asks for at least one year. New Mexico's education rules look for two years or more and a license at your target level or higher. If the state rule covers your placement, aim for two years, which satisfies Keiser as well.
Is New Mexico on Keiser's list of restricted states?
No. New Mexico counts as a 'meets' state on Keiser's FNP disclosure of November 2025, and the Graduate School FAQ's restriction list skips it. Because those Keiser documents clash over several other states, check your eligibility with the Graduate School anyway.
Can I split my practicums between New Mexico and Texas?
Keiser's disclosure lists Texas as meeting requirements, but each extra state brings another license and another round of site paperwork. One state per practicum is simpler, and Keiser's Clinical Coordinator should clear any out-of-state site first.
