Taking Keiser's nursing programs from Michigan
Michigan shows as a meets state on Keiser's November 2025 FNP disclosure, and the Graduate School's restriction list skips it. Because Michigan sits outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, every clinical hour you log there rests on a Michigan RN license, held together with the Florida license Keiser asks for.

Keiser program standing for Michigan nurses
Michigan residents weighing Keiser usually look at one of four programs. Their standing and clinical settings compare like this.
| Keiser program | Michigan residents? | Clinical placement |
|---|---|---|
| MSN FNP (online) | Meets on the FNP disclosure; Michigan is not among the FAQ's restricted states | Michigan practices you find, approved and contracted by Keiser; two Fort Lauderdale residencies |
| MSN WHNP (online) | Meets on the WHNP disclosure | Women's health sites you pick yourself; three residency weekends |
| Post-master's DNP | RN license in your home state; the degree leads to no license | Mentored clinical practice courses and one residency at the Flagship campus |
| RN to BSN (online) | RN license where you live | 45 hours in NUR4636, at a setting you choose with Department Chair approval |
The Graduate School decides who it admits, so check before you apply; the disclosures guide explains how Keiser's two state lists differ elsewhere.
Outside the compact: the Michigan license question
Michigan stays out of the Nurse Licensure Compact for now; NCSBN's map lists a membership bill, House Bill 4246, as pending. Until something changes, a compact license from Ohio, Indiana or any other member state stops at the Michigan line, so Keiser's requirement of a license in your clinical state points straight at a Michigan RN license.
If you have yet to get one, expect three extras on the Michigan application: a criminal background check, a one-time course in recognizing people who are being trafficked, and a two-hour implicit bias course that must fall inside the five-year window before your license issues. The Florida half of Keiser's rule, an active and unrestricted Florida RN license, is covered in the Florida license guide.
What the Michigan board oversees, and what it leaves to accreditors
Michigan's nursing board appears to leave visiting programs alone. Research located no rule or guidance obliging a school from another state to ask permission, or merely to give notice, before its students begin Michigan clinicals. The board's approval rules, which start at R 338.10301 of the state's administrative code, and its web page on education programs both concern schools inside Michigan, and the board was not asked directly.
For a license application, an out-of-state school counts in Michigan when one of three national accreditors, ACEN, CNEA or CCNE, recognizes it; board approval plays no part. Review Keiser's standing on the accreditation page. Keiser's policy manual also puts the burden on students training outside Florida to confirm that their board accepts the practicum hours, and the written verification Keiser wants from your home state, covering the rotations and NP licensure after you graduate, is the natural place to get that answer.
Restricted practice, preceptor credentials and a finished pilot
Michigan NPs prescribe controlled substances only under authority a physician delegates to them, which lands the state in AANP's restricted column. A Michigan NP also carries a state specialty certification, issued on two conditions: a current Michigan RN license, and national certification through a certifying body the board recognizes. Checking both for a prospective preceptor before Keiser's Program Director sees the paperwork saves a round of questions.
On preceptor incentives, Michigan's record is a single pilot. MDHHS's Office of Nursing Programs partnered with the MSU College of Nursing to offer incentives to people precepting MSU's family and psychiatric-mental health NP students. It is finished, it was limited to MSU, and research found no enacted Michigan preceptor tax credit. Keiser's preceptors take students as volunteers.
From Detroit to Grand Rapids: where to look
Detroit-Warren-Dearborn dwarfs the rest of the state at roughly 4.4 million people, with Flint, Lansing-East Lansing and Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood far smaller. Big Michigan systems include Corewell Health, McLaren Health Care, Michigan Medicine (formally University of Michigan Health), Trinity Health Michigan and Henry Ford Health. Those names sketch where a practicum could take place and imply no tie to Keiser; any site signs its own affiliation agreement with Keiser before you log hours.
Keiser's FNP students secure their own preceptors, begin planning about three months before each practicum, and fly to Fort Lauderdale twice, for three days in NUR671 and two in the final Integration Practicum. The residency guide helps you schedule around both trips.
Why Michigan students start with us
A Michigan placement carries more moving parts than most: a separate state license, credentials to verify and a physician-delegation market. We handle all of it as specialists in Keiser's clinical process. We track down a preceptor close to home whose clinic suits your practicum course, then pull together the CV, license and certification details, site contact and clinical dates that Keiser's Preceptor/Mentor Information Form and Clinical Coordinator look for, well ahead of the term. Keiser's faculty approve, and your file reaches them complete; if a preceptor drops, a replacement search begins the same week.
Questions Keiser students ask
Is a Michigan RN license required for Keiser clinicals in Michigan?
Yes. Michigan is not a compact state, so compact licenses from elsewhere carry no practice privilege there, and Keiser insists on a license in the state where your clinicals happen. Keep the active, unrestricted Florida RN license Keiser requires of every FNP and WHNP applicant as well.
Does Michigan make Keiser register before placing me in a clinic?
No such requirement was found. The Michigan Board of Nursing's rules and education page cover programs located in Michigan and say nothing about visiting schools giving notice. The board was not contacted, so ask about the current position when you request the home-state verification Keiser needs.
How can I confirm a Michigan NP preceptor's credentials?
Michigan certifies an NP only after seeing a current Michigan RN license and national certification from a recognized body, so ask to see both. Keiser layers on its own conditions: a license that is active and unencumbered, a minimum of one year in practice, and work at the site itself. The preceptor requirements guide lists them all.
Could I do clinicals across the line in Ohio or Indiana?
Both are open on Keiser's FNP disclosure, but a site there needs a license valid in that state, and your licensing board still has to accept the hours. Raise it with Keiser before approaching a preceptor; the Ohio guide covers that state's rules.
