NUR671 at Keiser: the course that opens the practicums

Keiser's catalog lists six prerequisites for the first practicum, NUR602A: NUR501, NUR502, NUR640, NUR650, NUR661 and NUR671. The FNP program page puts it more broadly, saying the core courses and the specialty trio of NUR650, NUR661 and NUR671 are finished before any clinical course starts. Within that trio, NUR671 comes last, because the catalog chain runs from NUR501 to NUR650, then NUR661, then NUR671.

Two wrinkles are worth knowing. The catalog's prerequisite line for NUR671 also cites NUR660 and NUR670, course numbers retired from the current FNP outline, and Keiser's web course list adds a line called Advanced Health Assessment for Best Practice that the catalog's 19-course outline leaves out. The first residency in Fort Lauderdale

The first of the FNP's two on-campus residencies takes place in the advanced assessment course: three days, Friday through Sunday, in Fort Lauderdale. The catalog frames each residency as an intensive weekend of campus instruction, and the Graduate School FAQ requires attendance in person. Budget for Keiser's one-time residency fee along with your own travel and lodging.

Request the time off work as soon as you know your NUR671 term. The second residency comes much later, inside the final Integration Practicum, and the FNP residencies page covers both weekends. WHNP students take NUR671 too, and for them it holds the first of three on-campus intensive weekends, followed by NUR612 and NUR614, with attendance counted in the grade.

Use the NUR671 term to line up NUR602A

Keiser's FNP guidance puts the start of clinical planning roughly three months ahead of each course. Three months is roughly 13 weeks, longer than one 8-week term, so if NUR602A follows directly after NUR671, the search has to be underway before NUR671 opens. A workable order looks like this.

1. Before NUR671 startsSettle the adult and older-adult primary care setting you want for NUR602A and NUR603A, and begin contacting preceptors or hand the search to your placement advisor.
2. Weeks 1 to 3Gather your preceptor's CV (or resume) with license information, then submit the Preceptor/Mentor Information Form for faculty review.
3. Weeks 4 to 6Confirm the site's affiliation agreement is signed or moving, and agree on clinical days that spread the 120 hours across all 8 weeks.
4. Weeks 7 and 8Give course faculty the plan for clinical course completion, listing your first and last clinical dates and the weekdays you will attend, and finish NUR671 with the B you need.
