Keiser's FNP from Maine: what is open, what to check, where to train

The Maine board's rules, and the gap in them
Nothing in the Maine board's rulebook or on its education web pages addresses visiting schools that send students into Maine clinics. Chapter 7, the education rule, exists to approve prelicensure programs rooted in Maine and carries no provision for visiting schools.
Maine's practice act has a student exemption, and it is narrow too: it shelters nursing done inside a board-approved course of study that ends in a first license, which is the prelicensure path. A Keiser FNP student is past that point, already an RN, and Keiser expects a license valid wherever the clinical hours are logged. Maine's compact membership, in effect from January 2018, means a Maine resident's multistate license reaches other compact states as well.
A silent board makes the written confirmation Keiser asks for more valuable, not less. Keiser's 2023 policy manual flags a risk too: a practicum completed beyond Florida's borders might not satisfy another state's licensing board. Put the question to the Maine board in writing: will it accept practicum hours from a Florida-based program and license you as an NP afterward?
Full practice, small metros and a pool worth mapping
Maine counts as full practice in AANP's ranking, though the freedom arrives in stages: an NP's first 24 months are spent supervised by a physician or another NP, or on staff at a hospital or clinic led by a physician medical director. Once past that stage, an NP can lead an independent clinic, and an established FNP in such a clinic is precisely the preceptor Keiser likes best.
The map is small. Portland-South Portland holds just under 580,000 people, with Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn far behind. MaineGeneral Health, Northern Light Health, MaineHealth and Central Maine Healthcare are the major health systems, mentioned here only to sketch where a practicum could land; any of them would sign an agreement with Keiser before your first hour.
One caution for southern Maine: neighboring New Hampshire is one of the states where Keiser's disclosure says the FNP falls short, so talk to Keiser before planning hours across that border. The New Hampshire guide covers its standing.
Keiser's requirements from a Maine address
What a Maine applicant lines up
- An active, unrestricted Florida RN license paired with the Maine or multistate license that covers your clinical site. The Florida license guide explains the pairing.
- Written word from Maine that it permits you to train there and, once you graduate, to be licensed as an NP.
- A preceptor and site you locate, approved by Keiser and covered by a signed affiliation agreement before any hours.
- A plan under way about three months before each practicum.
- Two trips south for residencies: a Friday-to-Sunday stay for
NUR671and a Saturday-and-Sunday stay during the Integration Practicum, both paid from your own travel budget.
Fort Lauderdale is a long trip from Maine, so read the residency guide before you schedule a practicum around either weekend.

Questions Keiser students ask
Is there a Maine approval step Keiser must clear before my clinicals?
None turned up. Chapter 7, the board's education rule, handles the approval of Maine prelicensure programs and has no section on schools from elsewhere placing students. Rules can change, so raise the question with the Maine State Board of Nursing when you collect the written verification Keiser requires, and file its reply with your application.
Can an independent Maine NP be my Keiser FNP preceptor?
Yes, when Keiser's standards are met: their license has to be active with no encumbrance, they need at least a year in practice, the clinic must be where they work, and they cannot be your immediate supervisor. Keiser leans toward a master's-prepared FNP. Maine's full-practice status lets a seasoned NP run a clinic independently, which makes such practices a sensible place to ask.
How do WHNP clinicals work for a Maine student?
Keiser's catalog offers help finding a WHNP site only in South Florida. From Maine, you select the site, and before registration opens for each clinical course, Keiser signs off on both the preceptor and the site and the Clinical Coordinator clears you. The WHNP carries three residency weekends rather than the FNP's two.
Is Keiser's DNP open to Maine residents?
Keiser's post-master's DNP requires a current RN license where you live; since the degree confers no new license, no licensure disclosure covers it.
