Professional liability insurance for Keiser clinicals
Keiser tells its graduate nursing students they must obtain personal liability insurance before clinical work begins, and proof of the policy goes to the Clinical Coordinator. Keiser's older Clinical Manual sets a minimum coverage level and allows a waiver when your rotation is at your own employer, so confirm both points with Keiser before you buy a policy or skip one.

What Keiser asks for, and where it says so
The requirement is plain on Keiser's side. The FNP program page lists personal liability insurance among the conditions that must be met before a practicum starts, alongside medical clearance, immunizations, a clear background check, a contracted site and an approved preceptor. Keiser's FNP question-and-answer text puts it as an obligation: students "must obtain personal liability insurance."
The Graduate Nursing Programs Clinical Manual adds the working detail. It sets a minimum amount of liability coverage, asks for a copy of the policy to go to the MSN FNP Clinical Coordinator, and allows a waiver when the clinical rotation takes place at the student's place of employment.
That manual is the older of Keiser's two graduate nursing manuals, and the coverage minimum appears only there. The 2026-27 Graduate Catalog governs where Keiser's documents differ, and it does not restate the minimum. Treat the manual's figure as the starting point and ask the Clinical Coordinator to confirm the level Keiser currently expects before you buy.
Which policy this is, and which it is not
Three kinds of cover get mixed up in clearance files, and only one of them answers this requirement. Keiser's wording is personal liability insurance: a policy in your own name that responds to claims arising from your clinical work as a student.
- Your personal liability policy: the one Keiser asks for, held in your name, with proof sent to the Clinical Coordinator.
- Medical health insurance: a separate Keiser requirement that covers your own health care. It sits on the health requirements page.
- Your employer's coverage: relevant only through the waiver in the Clinical Manual, which applies when the rotation is at your own workplace.
If you already hold a policy as a registered nurse, ask the Clinical Coordinator whether it satisfies Keiser for your nurse practitioner clinicals, and ask the insurer whether it covers you as a student in an advanced practice program. Get both answers before your first practicum rather than assuming the RN policy stretches that far.
The employer waiver, read closely
Keiser's Clinical Manual allows the liability insurance requirement to be waived when your rotation is at your employer. It is a narrow door. It opens only for the rotation that actually happens at your workplace, and that rotation must also pass Keiser's separate tests for training at an employer, which the workplace clinicals page sets out.
Some students plan one practicum at their workplace and place the rest elsewhere. Under that plan the waiver reaches only the employer rotation; every practicum at another site needs your own policy in force. Each of the five FNP practicums is a separate 8-week term, so the insurance question returns whenever the site does.
Because the waiver comes from the older manual, check with the Clinical Coordinator that Keiser still honors it for your course, and file whatever confirmation you get.
A waiver at your employer does not carry over to your next site. The practicum after it needs your own policy in force.
Keeping coverage active across five practicums
A policy that lapses between terms can stall a practicum as surely as a missing signature. Work through these steps once, then repeat the date check each term.
- Confirm the requirementAsk the Clinical Coordinator what coverage level Keiser currently expects and what proof it accepts.
- Buy before approval, not afterHave the policy in force before your first practicum so it is ready when your file is reviewed.
- Send proof to the right personThe Clinical Manual directs a copy to the MSN FNP Clinical Coordinator. Keep your own copy as well.
- Match the dates to the termCheck that the policy period covers every clinical day of the 8-week practicum, including any make-up days near the end.
- Renew and resendWhen the policy renews, send the new proof before the next practicum starts rather than waiting to be asked.
The graduate calendar page lists Keiser's term start dates, which makes it easy to compare policy dates against each practicum.
Where insurance fits in Keiser's approval sequence
Liability insurance is one of several items that must be finished before your first clinical hour, and it has no reason to wait for the rest. While you and your preceptor complete the Preceptor/Mentor Information Form, the site and Keiser work through the affiliation agreement, and your clearance items, including this policy, can be settled at the same time.
Running them in parallel is what keeps a start date intact. Keiser's advice to start roughly three months before each clinical course gives room for every track, provided none of them is left until the final weeks. The placement process overview shows the full sequence from first search to first clinical day.
For WHNP and DNP students, the Clinical Manual speaks to Keiser's graduate nursing programs generally, so ask your own program's coordinator how the insurance requirement applies to your clinical courses.
Why Keiser students trust us with the details
Our placements follow Keiser's own sequence step by step. We locate a preceptor and site near home that suit your practicum, then gather the credentials, resume, signer details and clinic calendar that Keiser's reviewers ask for. Your insurance proof sits on that same checklist, with its policy dates held up against the term we are placing you in.
If your plan uses your employer for one practicum, we point out which later practicums need your own policy, so a new site never catches you short, and each renewal date is compared with the practicum calendar before anything goes to Keiser. Keiser's faculty decide on approval, and they receive a file with nothing missing. Tell us your practicum in the form below.
Questions Keiser students ask
Does Keiser require malpractice insurance for FNP students?
Keiser's own term is personal liability insurance, which is what many nurses call malpractice cover. The FNP program page lists it among the items required before a practicum begins, and the Clinical Manual asks for a copy to go to the MSN FNP Clinical Coordinator. Confirm the details with that coordinator before buying.
How much liability coverage does Keiser require?
Keiser's older Graduate Nursing Programs Clinical Manual sets a minimum coverage amount, and that figure appears in no other Keiser document we reviewed. Because the 2026-27 Graduate Catalog governs and does not restate it, ask the Clinical Coordinator for the current minimum and buy to that level.
Can I use my employer's insurance for Keiser clinicals?
Only through the waiver. Keiser's Clinical Manual lets the requirement be waived when the rotation is at your employer, and that rotation must also meet Keiser's workplace conditions. For any practicum at another site, you need your own personal liability policy, with proof sent to the Clinical Coordinator.
Where do I send proof of liability insurance at Keiser?
Keiser's Clinical Manual directs a copy of the policy to the MSN FNP Clinical Coordinator, the same office that receives the Preceptor/Mentor Information Form. Keep your own copy, and send renewed proof before each practicum that falls after your policy's renewal date.
Is liability insurance the same as the health insurance Keiser requires?
No. They are two separate requirements. Liability insurance covers claims that arise from your clinical work as a student, while Keiser's health insurance rule asks you to keep active medical coverage for your own care throughout your clinical program. Your clearance file needs proof of both.
