Iowa and Keiser's FNP: the conditions Iowa sets for programs based elsewhere
In Keiser's November 2025 FNP disclosure, Iowa is a meets state, and the Graduate School FAQ leaves it off its restriction list. Iowa's Board of Nursing does not sign off on programs from other states, but it sets terms for any that send students to Iowa sites, and those terms touch whose license counts and what the clinical contract says.

Keiser programs an Iowa nurse can consider
Keiser's graduate nursing degrees are online through the Graduate School, and your clinical time is spent near home. For Iowa, the options look like this.

Iowa's checklist for programs from other states
Iowa's Board of Nursing, which sits in the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing, posts a page of terms for schools based elsewhere whose students train in Iowa:
- permission to operate, granted by the Bureau of Iowa College Aid
- following Iowa's laws in addition to its own state's rules
- handing data to the board on request
- Iowa or multistate licenses for all its nursing faculty and preceptors working in Iowa
- clinical contracts covering who does what, faculty control of what students learn, a yearly review and how the arrangement ends
Research did not confirm whether Keiser holds Iowa College Aid clearance, so ask the Graduate School about it before you apply. The contract terms line up with the affiliation agreement Keiser signs with every site, on Keiser's template or the agency's own; see affiliation agreements.
Your license in Iowa
A licensed nurse doing clinicals in Iowa for a post-licensure program needs an active license valid in Iowa, whether Iowa-issued or multistate, and practices under Iowa Code; the program and the facility both approve the preceptor. Iowa's exemption for nursing students will not cover you, since anyone who already holds a nursing license in any U.S. jurisdiction is outside it.
Iowa is a compact state, and NCSBN lists its implementation date as January 2018. Keiser's graduate catalog sets two license conditions, an unrestricted Florida RN license and a license valid where your clinicals happen, and non-Florida applicants obtain written verification from their state that the rotations and a future NP license are both allowed. ARNP practice and preceptor fit
Nurse practitioners in Iowa carry the ARNP title, and on AANP's map the state has full practice.
Iowa's rule for ARNP program preceptorships asks that the bulk of a student's experience be with an ARNP or physician working in the same role and patient population the student is training for, licensed in the state where they practice, under a written agreement reviewed yearly. Keiser's list points the same direction: a master's-prepared FNP first, with MDs and DOs also accepted. See Keiser's preceptor rules.
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Davenport
Greater Des Moines is Iowa's biggest metro; Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and the Davenport area, shared with Illinois, are the other main population centers. The large systems include MercyOne, UnityPoint Health and University of Iowa Health Care, and DNP students needing a community setting can look at Iowa's Department of Health and Human Services.
These are examples, not Keiser partners; each site still needs Keiser's preceptor approval and an affiliation agreement. Moline and Rock Island lie in Illinois, a non-compact state where you would need an Illinois RN license, and Minnesota sits on both Keiser's FNP does-not-meet list and the Graduate School FAQ's restriction list.
Residencies and timing
The FNP calls you to Fort Lauderdale for a three-day on-campus block in the health assessment course and again for a weekend near the end, during the Integration Practicum; travel costs are the student's. The second arrives in your heaviest clinical term, so build it into the preceptor's calendar from the start. Keiser's rule of thumb is to begin the search about three months early. Is Keiser's FNP open to Iowa residents?
On paper, yes. Keiser's November 2025 FNP disclosure lists Iowa under 'meets', and Iowa is missing from the restriction answer in the Graduate School FAQ. The two documents diverge for other states, and only Keiser can admit you, so put the question to the Graduate School early.
Does Keiser need Iowa College Aid approval for my clinicals?
Iowa's board names College Aid clearance as one of its terms for schools from other states whose students train in Iowa. Public sources used for this guide did not show Keiser's status, so ask the Graduate School whether that clearance is in place before you commit to an Iowa site.
Does precepting me count toward my preceptor's Iowa license renewal?
It can. Iowa grants 6 contact hours toward renewal to a nurse who precepts a student through an organized preceptorship of 60 hours or longer, documented by the school. Keiser's adult practicums run 120 hours each in the 2026-27 Graduate Catalog, so a preceptor can ask the Iowa board whether a Keiser rotation qualifies.
Can Iowa nurses take Keiser's online DNP?
Keiser's post-master's DNP asks for an unrestricted RN license from your state of residence and does not lead to licensure. Its practice courses pair you with a mentor, and a two-day doctoral residency at the Flagship campus comes before ADP902. Confirm eligibility with Keiser; the DNP page lays out the courses.
