Alabama residents and Keiser's nurse practitioner programs
Keiser's November 2025 licensure disclosure says its Family Nurse Practitioner program does not meet Alabama's educational requirements, and the WHNP disclosure agrees, even though the Graduate School FAQ leaves Alabama off its restriction list. Alabama's Board of Nursing adds its own gate for advanced practice programs based elsewhere. The online RN to BSN or the post-master's DNP may still fit, so confirm with Keiser before you apply.

Two Keiser lists, and the one that speaks to licensure
Keiser publishes two state lists that do not match. Its professional licensure disclosure, updated November 2025, places Alabama among thirteen states where the FNP falls short of educational requirements for licensure. The Graduate School FAQ names a different set of restricted states, and Alabama is missing from that set.
The disclosure is the document built around licensure, so read it as the working answer. Keiser's catalog also asks every applicant living outside Florida for written verification that the home state permits clinical rotations and NP licensure after graduation, which in Alabama would come from the ABN. Compare both lists on the Keiser licensure disclosures page, then ask the Graduate School which one governs your file.
The ABN's letter-of-intent rule
Alabama polices clinical learning by programs based in other states. Under rule 610-X-3-.09, an outside prelicensure or advanced practice program files a letter of intent and supporting approval papers with the ABN, and the Board must have them in hand 15 days or more before any student begins clinical work in Alabama. The filing lists the students and their license numbers, the supervising clinician and that person's license number, the host facility and a letter from its chief nurse, and the program pays a yearly out-of-state fee.
The Board says outright that no student attends clinicals in Alabama until approval is granted and that fee is paid, and research found no public ABN roster of outside programs that have filed. Students already licensed as RNs, a group the ABN's FAQ illustrates with RN to BSN, MSN and DNP enrollees, need Alabama licensure or compact multistate licensure without encumbrances for clinical work in the state. Faculty teaching Alabama-based students beyond 30 days in a year need the same.
Practice rules, compact status and Alabama care settings
Alabama has been a compact state since the start of 2020, so a multistate license issued there lets you work as an RN across the other compact states. AANP files Alabama under reduced practice: an Alabama NP needs a physician collaborator under a formal, regulated arrangement, and NP practice answers to two regulators at once, the nursing board and the medical examiners.
Birmingham is the largest metro, trailed by Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery. UAB Medicine anchors Birmingham and Huntsville Hospital Health System the north; USA Health (South Alabama's academic system) shares Mobile with Infirmary Health; Montgomery has Baptist Health. They show where patient volume sits, not where Keiser holds agreements. APTIP, Alabama's income tax credit for preceptors who teach without pay in rural underserved communities, is limited to rotations supporting programs physically based in Alabama, which leaves out a Florida school like Keiser.
What may still fit for an Alabama nurse
Keiser's online RN to BSN admits RNs licensed where they reside, and its one clinical course, NUR4636, is 45 hours in a setting you pick for the University Department Chair to approve. For the post-master's DNP, which ends in a degree rather than a new license, Keiser wants an active RN license from your home state. Alabama's license rule still covers any hours logged inside the state. Keiser decides eligibility for both, so get its answer before enrolling.
Only New York residents get a cross-border clinical option in Keiser's FAQ. If you are picturing practicums in Georgia while living in Alabama, ask the Graduate School in writing first.

Must Keiser clear anything with the ABN before Alabama clinicals?
For an advanced practice program based outside Alabama, yes. The ABN wants a letter of intent and approval papers on file at least two weeks and a day before students start, plus an annual out-of-state program fee, and keeps students out of clinicals until both are in. No public ABN roster of filed programs turned up, so ask Keiser.
Which RN license covers clinical hours in Alabama?
The ABN's FAQ expects RN-licensed students (RN to BSN, MSN, DNP) doing clinical work in Alabama to hold an unencumbered Alabama license or compact multistate licensure. For the FNP and WHNP, Keiser separately requires an active, unrestricted Florida RN license next to the license for the clinical state.
Can my Alabama preceptor claim APTIP for teaching me?
Under APTIP's rules, probably not. The credit counts rotations supporting programs physically located in Alabama, and Keiser is based in Florida. Keiser's preceptors are volunteers and Keiser lists no preceptor payment, so the match rests on a clinician who wants to teach.
