Keiser's nursing programs for Mississippi residents
Keiser's November 2025 FNP disclosure places Mississippi among the states where the program meets requirements, and the Graduate School's restriction list leaves it off. What sets Mississippi apart is a higher-education gatekeeper: the state's university board reviews nursing programs from elsewhere before they run clinicals on Mississippi soil.

The IHL review: Mississippi's extra gate
Oversight of Mississippi nursing degrees sits with the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, usually shortened to IHL, while the Board of Nursing's program approvals are for LPN-level practical nursing. IHL expects out-of-state nursing programs at either degree level that run clinicals in Mississippi to meet its standards. It treats a practicum inside the state as the school being physically present there, and that brings a review by IHL Nursing Education lasting as long as three months.
The program must also either take part in SARA or hold non-SARA authorization through the MCCA, and Keiser's SARA membership covers that. Whether Keiser has been through IHL's review was not checked, so make it your first question to the Graduate School if Mississippi is where you want to train.
IHL's August 2024 procedures manual wants programs controlled outside Mississippi to ask for review at least four months before they start, a longer runway than the three months Keiser suggests for clinical planning.
Licenses, the compact and collaborative practice
Under IHL's program standards, a post-licensure student in an APRN clinical course must hold an RN license, unencumbered, that is good in whichever state the clinicals take place, and schools from elsewhere are held to that bar. The compact has applied in Mississippi since January 2018. Its board explains that a nurse who declares a compact state as primary residence and stays in good standing can work in other compact states, and that an employer may not insist on a separate remote-state license.
Keiser's own layer is an active, unrestricted Florida RN license, explained in the Florida license guide. AANP's map shades Mississippi as reduced practice, because an NP there must work in a collaborative arrangement, approved by the board, with a Mississippi physician or dentist. Keiser accepts MDs and DOs as FNP preceptors alongside the master's-prepared FNPs it prefers, so collaborating physicians are worth a call.
Jackson, the Coast and the Memphis fringe
Jackson is the biggest metro at about 610,000 residents; Gulfport-Biloxi, Hattiesburg and the Mississippi counties of the Memphis metro follow. Among the larger employers are North Mississippi Health Services, Forrest Health, Singing River Health System and the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC); Baptist Memorial Health Care, headquartered in Memphis, operates Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. They show where a practicum could happen, not where Keiser holds an agreement.
State lines deserve care here. Alabama, Louisiana and Tennessee all appear on Keiser's does-not-meet list for the FNP, Louisiana is also on the FAQ restriction list, and Arkansas is open. Before logging hours outside Mississippi, check with Keiser; the Tennessee guide covers that state's standing.

Which Mississippi agency reviews a nursing school based in another state?
IHL, the trustees who oversee Mississippi's public universities, not the Board of Nursing. IHL counts an in-state clinical practicum as physical presence, reviews outside programs that place students in Mississippi, and expects SARA participation or MCCA authorization. The Board of Nursing approves programs at the practical nursing level.
Has Keiser completed Mississippi's IHL review?
That was not checked for this guide. IHL allows itself up to three months for a review and asks outside programs to file their request four or more months ahead, so ask Keiser's Graduate School about Mississippi clinicals before you apply or approach a preceptor.
Can a physician precept me for Keiser's FNP in Mississippi?
Yes, Keiser accepts MDs and DOs, while preferring a master's-prepared FNP and allowing a limited number of other NPs. Keiser's WHNP disclosure lists Mississippi as meeting requirements. The catalog's site help covers South Florida only, so a Mississippi student picks the site, and Keiser requires preceptor and site approval plus Clinical Coordinator clearance before each clinical course, so begin looking early.
